I was called to go on 12 hour duty in a nearby hospital last night. One of the doctors had somewhere to go and asked if she could leave half of her shift to me. I agreed, knowing that after years of doing clinical work in the PGH it would be nice to work in a private hospital for once.
I wish I could tell you all the gory details of what happened during my shift, but I’m still not quite sure how much I can reveal in a blog entry without violating my patients’ privacy. I’ll need to talk to a lawyer about the limitations of privileged communication before I can safely blog about some of my experiences as a doctor. I have so many stories to tell, but these stories involve the lives of real people — people who may not want their stories posted in the net for everyone to read.
I searched for other blogs written by doctors, hoping that they could serve as examples, and I stumbled upon Kill As Few Patients As Possible, DB’s Medical Rants and Medpundit. I’ll be perusing their archives as soon as find enough time to do so. My stories — rather, my patients’ stories — will have to wait.
I’d better get some sleep as I’ll be meeting a few friends for dinner later.
