Leave it to a virus to spoil my week. Rabid displays of enthusiasm for being accepted into the PGH’s Department of Internal Medicine will have to wait. Right now, I just want to lie in bed, prevent my nose from getting too clogged, and avoid any physical activity that involves anything more than getting up and walking to the bathroom, thumbing the remote control or leafing through a paperback. Heaving a small mound of used Kleenex into the garbage can is the only excercise I plan on doing today. For once, I have a valid excuse for being a couch potato.

Thank God there are no decent films opening this week. At least three blogs I’ve read today have raved about Kill Bill Vol. 1, and, being a Tarantino fanboy, I would have been utterly devastated if this darn cold prevented my from seeing it on opening day. The Coen brothers’ Intolerable Cruelty is probably still weeks away, and the final installments to The Matrix and The Lord of the Rings trilogies will be out either late December or early January. This cinematic drought makes my date with the home entertainment system more of a welcome treat than a consolation.

I’ve been planning to go on a video binge ever since I started reviewing for the Boards, but I never had the opportunity to do so until now. Good thing my cousin recently lent me three VCDs from his Kurosawa collection: Yojimbo, Sanjuro, and The Hidden Fortress. Yesterday, I only managed to view Yojimbo (which, by the way, is the basis for Last Man Standing) as even lying down with my eyes open seemed like a chore. I’m feeling a little better today so I’ll probably be able to endure a double feature.

Doctor’s advice: the only way to deal with a cold or a flu is to wait it out. Get lots of bed rest and drink lots of water. The pills will help you with the bodyaches, the nasal congestion and the fever, but it’s basically just a waiting game.
