This is a very rare respite from the endless ward rounds and note-taking. I am very, very tired. Most of our patients are dying. Unable to shoulder the expenses of health care, most opt to postpone medical consults, thus they arrive in the hospital in the late stages of their diseases. The government has cut our budget so we have to make do with what little resources we have. Some we help to get well. Some we comfort until they die. Some get so frustrated with the system that they even refuse our help, leaving the hospital as sick as when they came in.
Great, you might say… Another gripe session. I’m sorry, but our government’s lack of support for health services is very disappointing. I had to watch a family take their comatose mother home against medical advice because they couldn’t afford to buy the antibiotics she needed.
She probably died on the way home.
I am not feeling very good as a doctor right now. I’ll try to sleep it off, but there are just some things you can’t forget.
I would do anything for a moment’s peace.
