A fire erupted in one of the buildings of the Philippine General Hospital last night. There was a hospital wide black out and some wards had to be evacuated because of the thick smoke. Since the mechanical ventilators weren’t working, intubated patients at the charity wards had to be bagged by hand. With no electricity to charge the defibrillators, one patient who went into ventricular tachycardia received a precordial thump instead of the recommended starting 100 joules. Interns and clerks had to monitor critical patients in the dark. Boy, was I glad I was off that day! (I had to crash at a colleague’s apartment though. The fire was too close to our dorm building, which was right beside the hospital’s liquid oxygen tank.)
