This is the x-ray of 43 year old male smoker. The opacity in his left lung could be accumulating fluid or a pulmonary mass. Physical examination revealed that sound is better transmitted in the area where the opacity is located, which means that it’s more solid than liquid (remember your high school physics, kids). Now, given the patient’s history of chain-smoking, this is most likely lung cancer.
If you are a smoker or have a family member or friend who smokes, I would like you to take a good look at this x-ray. There are a lot of good programs out there that can help people with nicotine addiction — I suggest you look them up.
(By the way, I’m collecting medical images in my Flickr account. If you’re a med student, I’d like you to study my X-ray photoset.)
