Across the Universe (2007)
6/10
2008-02-21 09:15
Julie Taymor's Beatles musical about love and growing up. Arresting visuals and solid dramatic performances do little to save the movie from its lack of coherence and average vocals. Some of the songs were forced in my opinion.

Babel (2006)
8/10
2007-02-02 11:08
One of the best films of 2006 in my opinion. But I understand why some people don't like it. The film's pacing is not for everyone.

Cloverfield (2008)

Great trailer. Interesting but not really an original concept. Surprisingly ok for a horror / love story.

Crank (2006)
6/10

Jason Statham's action hero status is undeniable. Crank may not be the best movie out there, but it has a fresh take on the action genre. The movie doesn't take itself seriously, so the watcher shouldn't as well. Most memorable scene: the "action scene" in Chinatown.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007)
5/10

Shame on you, Shekhar Kapur, for making this mediocre sequel to your brilliant movie Elizabeth. The love triangle subplot sapped the energy out of all the performances, even Cate Blanchett's.

Hard Candy (2005)
8/10
2006-08-01 13:06
Great performances from both Ellen Page and Patrick Wilson. The visuals for this thriller were stunning. The only thing preventing me from giving it a 5/5: I felt Page's character needed more fleshing out. The revelatory moments were few, but this was a flaw of the script and not Page's performance

I'm a bona fide Ellen Page fan now.

Laberinto del fauno, El (2006)
10/10

Guillermo del Toro rocks! With this movie, he proves he knows a lot more about telling modern fairy tales than Shyamalan.

Lady in the Water (2006)
2/10

I'm an M.Night Shyamalan fan. I even liked "Unbreakable" and "The Village." But this is the worst piece of drivel I've watched all year. Not even Giamatti's performance could compensate for the poor camera work, awkward progression and the failed attempts at humor.

MirrorMask (2005)
5/10
2006-10-01 17:37
Dave McKean is a talented graphic artist, but it's obvious he can't direct. I worship Neil Gaiman, but his script for MirrorMask is full of awkwardness and failed attempts at humor. Visually, the movie is topnotch, but Labyrinth, it is not.

No Country for Old Men (2007)
8/10
2008-02-10 10:02
A bit over-rated I think, but a good movie nonetheless. Bardem creates the ultimate bad guy here in his role as Anton Chigurh. Josh Brolin and Tommy Lee Jones have solid performances.

Once (2006)
8/10

A indie gem. Proves you can make great movies with just a handycam and some vision. The song "Falling Slowly" deserves the Oscar win for Best Song.

The Descent (2005)

A well-executed horror flick. Better than The Hills Have Eyes. Which isn't saying much.

The Tracey Fragments (2007)

If Piet Mondrian and Pablo Picasso collaborated to make an indie film, it would look pretty much like this. Ellen Page is brilliant as always.

There Will Be Blood (2007)
9/10
2008-03-02 01:00
This should have won best picture in my opinion. Paul Thomas Anderson's restraint and dramatic pacing makes for a very satisfying viewing experience. And Daniel Day-Lewis is an effin' genius! "I drink your milkshake!"

V for Vendetta (2005)
8/10

Great adaptation of the Alan Moore classic. Hugo Weaving delivers a spectacular performance despite the fact his face is hidden the enitre movie.
